Potrà sembrarvi strano: scrivere a quattro mani la biografia di mio padre è stato facilissimo. Per molti anni dopo la scomparsa di Giovanni Michelotti ho “sognato” di riuscire a raccontarlo in modo completo in un libro, citando le sue opere senza dimenticare nulla. Ho provato da solo, con giornalisti autorevoli, con appassionati, ricercatori. Tutti hanno presto desistito non appena l'esame dei suoi progetti rivelava l'enorme quantità di Automobili che aveva realizzato. Un impegno troppo grande, per tutti. Ma con l'esperienza di qualche anno in più sulle spalle si riesce a comprendere dove si sbaglia. Avevo capito che era l'uomo che doveva essere raccontato e messo al centro dell'attenzione: il suo estro, la sua semplicità, la sua straordinaria preparazione tecnica, il suo marketing anticipato di decenni, con il contorno delle sue meravigliose opere. Avevo vissuto accanto a lui fino alla sua morte e per me era cosa normale esaltarne le qualità. Ma non era così per il pubblico. Compresi che per raccontarle a chi conosceva solo alcune sue realizzazioni, qualche splendida autovettura o qualche breve aneddoto non bastava solo la mia memoria: avevo bisogno di chi potesse capirmi. La penna e la mente di Giancarlo Cavallini hanno permesso di tradurre per iscritto la vita di mio padre. Volevamo un libro comprensibile anche a coloro che non hanno la sfrenata passione per le Automobili, a lettori di romanzi, novelle, poesie ma comunque lettori curiosi.
